7 Quick Takes Friday

by Hallie @ Moxie Wife on May 10, 2012

1.

Welcome Conversion Diary readers! As always, it’s a pleasure!

(If you’re new here, you can subscribe to my feed by email or on a feed reader. I’d love to get to know you all better, and can’t wait to check out your blogs!)

2.

Krista (2nd from the right) and Melissa (far right).

Melissa of Isela Maria contacted me this week to tell me about her friend, Krista, who is preparing to enter the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia in Nashville, TN this August. As with so many who discern a call to religious life, Krista has a lot of debt that she needs to pay off before she can enter. Melissa has sweetly offered to sell some of her beautiful photographs and give the proceeds to Krista. You can read more about that, and about their sweet friendship here.

3.

Style, Sex, and Substance just sold out on Amazon for the third time! To those of you who’ve purchased a copy, thank you so much for your support! It means the world to me.

At the moment, Amazon is saying that there is a 7-11 day shipping delay. In my experience, their estimates tend to be conservative but if any of you would like a (non-Kindle version) copy sooner you can purchase a copy directly from my publisher here. You can also purchase a signed copy from me by clicking on the Paypal button below:

4.

Speaking of Style, Sex, and Substance,  many thanks to Emily Stimpson for mentioning the book in her latest piece for OSV Newsweekly, Catholic Women in Their Own Words – a fantastic article that gave a group of Catholic women (myself included) the opportunity to “set the record straight about sex, motherhood, marriage, prayer and contraception.” With so many in the mainstream media trying to speak for us, it was refreshing to be given the opportunity to speak for ourselves. Do check it out!

5.

The weather here has been gorgeous lately so I’ve been spending nearly every morning at the park reading while my kids play. I think I’ve finished three  novels this week alone! What should I read next? I’m not looking for anything terribly heavy, just a few fun novels I can crack open while keeping one eye on the littles. Oh, and as I mentioned on Twitter, if you suggest a book about women written by a man, I’ll consider it highly suspect. ;)

6.

Isn't she the cutest?

Congratulations to my cute friend, Cari, on the birth of her daughter, Veronica Rosemary! Do yourself a favor and go take a peek at her sweet girl over here. I guarantee your day will be better for it. Are babies not the most delicious things ever?

7.

On a sadder note, I’m sure most of you have seen Jen’s request for prayers by now. I just wanted to add that though she’s being understandably vague, what she witnessed was truly horrific (and honestly, even that feels like an understatement). If you could please pray for the young man who lost his life, his family and friends, and for Jen, I know that they would all appreciate it deeply.

Wow, I wish I could get through three books in a week. I’m slowly making it through two different books right now. :)

Prayers for Jen and all affected. It sounds horrible. :(

St. Cecilia’s is beautiful.
I’m having to wait till summer before visiting the Dominican sisters just north of here (Mission San Jose).

5: Maybe some Debbie Macomber stuff? Her books dealing with the yarn shop on Blossom Street in Seattle are good. I’m more of a murder mystery girl and I love Joanne Fluke (cookies), Joanna Carl (chocolate), Margaret Maron (female judge), Lilian Jackson Braun (Siamese cats), Mary Daheim (2 series) and G. A. McKevett (totally awesome on Facebook).

hostess with the mostess — can you tell me/us what novels you enjoyed? I’m dying to get lost in a book — Julia is killing me lately and I need a healthy distraction.

Hallie,

@#5 – just because you threw it out there – have you ever read Hannah Coulter by Wendell Barry? I think he does an INCREDIBLE job of narration from a woman’s perspective! I have no idea what your style is – but it’s a very contemplative but very real read. I highly recommend it.

Hello Hallie! It’s wonderful to meet you! Thanks for hosting this week. Prayers for the family of the young man who was killed and all who witnessed the accident. Just wondering…when is your book coming out on Kindle? (I’m a Kindle reader). Second, if you’re looking for a quick read, my third novel, Stealing Jenny, is FREE today on Kindle (although I can send you a print copy if you’re interested…) I’ve been told that my novels are intense (this one is about a pregnant woman getting kidnapped). Third, I’ll keep Krista in prayer and will likely meet her at some point in the future because my sister is a novice with the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia in Nashville. I LOVE visiting my sister at the Motherhouse in Nashville (we’ll be going this summer when my sister receives her black veil). God bless…

Thanks for hosting Seven Quick Takes this week. Do you not have a linky list or can I just not see it? That is the question. I’m praying for Jen and that poor young man and his family.

Hi Hallie, thanks for hosting. I’m keeping Jen and everyone affected in my prayers.

For take 5, these are a few novels I’ve recently finished and enjoyed: Keepers of the House by Shirley Ann Grau; Foreign Affairs by Alison Lurie (especially if you’re an Anglophile!); Edge of Sadness by Edwin O’Connor; and The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields.

The Number One Ladies Detective series is my huge recommendation right now, especially with a new book just released. Sure, Mma. Romotswe is written by a male author, and Botswana is being written by a Scot, but these books? Are awesome. Happy reading!

Have you ever read ‘The Three Martini Playdate?’ It’s the one I grab whenever I need a good laugh. Totally light and hilarious- you can definitely keep an eye on the kiddies while you read. And oddly enough, it has some sage advice as well.

I recently read a book called Gods of Gotham by Lynsay Faye (check spelling). It is a period novel, a mystery I guess, set in 1850s NYC. The characters are really interesting and the story is not so complicated that you need to take notes to keep up, nor so simple that you figure things out in the first 2 chapters.

Congrats on the book! Our book club is LOVING it; I’m going to write a review based on our discussions once we’re all done with it. I’ll be sure to send it your way. :)

I have to recommend Nancy Mitford. I think you will just love her. It’s like Downton Abbey in book form. Start with The Pursuit of Love. You won’t be disappointed!

Please let Jen know we are all praying for her and those involved!

I love Take 2. I checked out her site and I’ll be ordering a photo. The ones from the Old Mission Flower Farm are gorgeous! Perfect to frame and hang in the house!

#5 – I mentioned in my Quick Takes that I was going to start reading the novel “Lessons in the Journey” but it is written by a man, so you may not be up to it. ;-)

My duaghter is blessed to attend a school adminsitered by the Domincian Sisters of St. Cecelia. I will send Krista some funds. I hate to think that debt is a deterrent to admission to that order. The sisters at my daughter’s school are everywhere, including prom and after-prom parties, out early in the morning participating in fund raising walks, etc. They are quite an order.
