I recently spotted a pin on Pinterest that reminded me that I hadn’t shared my super simple tip for applying liquid liner. I can’t take credit for this particular trick as I’m sure I picked it up from some magazine years ago, but since it hasn’t failed me yet, I thought I’d share it so that all of you lovely ladies can benefit, too!
As many of you know, I am a huge liquid liner fan. This may surprise you, but in addition to my simply favoring the look, it’s a lifestyle thing. I am constantly on my feet, running to and fro and after little ones, cooking over a hot stove, etc. With all that hustle and bustle, I just can’t rely on pencil liner not to smudge and fade.
Of course, this busy life of mine also means that I don’t have tons of time to primp in the morning and we all know that liquid liner can take a bit of time to get just right so, what to do?
Integrate one simple step into your makeup routine that promises fast and flawless liquid liner application, that’s what!
Before you start to work with the liquid liner, line your eyes with a similarly colored pencil liner (which are so much easier to control). Once the pencil liner is in place, just trace over it with your liquid liner of choice, and voila! A perfect, smudge-free, classic cat eye is yours!
If you’re not already a liquid liner aficionado, I highly recommend you give it a shot. And what better opportunity than the upcoming Halloween holiday? Go for it, girlie girls! If nothing else, it promises to be a fun experiment.
Oh, and here are a few extra pieces of advice that I’ve gathered from my many years of experimenting with liquid liner:
- Rest the palm of your hand on your cheek for stability and use short, smooth, overlapping strokes starting at the inner corner and moving out.
- Benefit’s Magic Ink is far and away the best traditional liquid liner I have ever tried. I’ve experimented with a great many and am always changing my mind, but at the moment Magic Ink easily takes the cake.
- If you’re looking for a slightly softer liquid liner look, though, I simply adore Bobbi Brown’s gel eyeliner. I have it in brown and black and wear it pretty much every day. (You’ll need to have an eye liner brush to use it.)
- And yes, I do alternate colors. I usually favor a classic black cat eye, I’m finding the during pregnancy I feel more drawn to Bobbi Brown’s softer brown gel eyeliner.
So there you go! For all of you cutie pies who have written and asked how on earth I have time to apply liquid liner every day, that’s my little secret. Let me know if you try it! I think you’ll find it works wonders.
Oh, and if you’re not ready to invest in a liquid liner but think you might like to try it out, simply head to any makeup counter and ask them to apply it for you. Wear it for a day and see what you think!

I used liquid liner for a while. I found that a q-tip dipped in eye makeup remover worked great fix any mistakes! Of course, this means putting on the rest of your eye makeup after, but I don’t think it made a huge difference, most of the time. Now I use Physicians Formula Gel eyeliner and LOVE it. It goes on so much nicer and last a lot longer for me than what I had been using.
Thanks for the tips!

Thanks for the tip, cutie pie!
Great post–I’ve wondered about liquid liner but figured I’d make a mess of it. I love the liner on “Snow White’s” eyes (Gennifer Goodwin) in the TV show ONCE UPON A TIME. Will have to give it a whirl!

Oooh, me too! I absolutely adore her makeup on that show!
You asked for our favorite topics – this is it for me. Here’s why – I’ve abandoned all my fave beauty blogs because most of them would lean toward the inappropriate. I didn’t want my daughter to think that is ok.
Laura Mercier tight line liner is my favorite. I will be checking out the Benefit. Also there is a Chanel gel liner that I love for a smoky eye. My toddler generally crashes into me right when I get to liner so my eyes are a different shape daily.

I’ve always heard such great things about Laura Mercier but have never tried her line out myself. I need to remedy that! Thanks for the nudge!
How did you know I have been bemoaning (to myself) the fact that my eyeliner is always smudged by dinnertime? I’ve even taken to only lining the top of my eye, but it still manages to smudge onto the bottom lid… I bought liquid liner once, but made a huge mess out of applying it and never tried it again. I’m totally going to try this trick out. You are the best!

Aw, thanks! You’re such a peach! Let me know what you think after you try it! :)
I tried it today, and so far it has worked beautifully! The applying pencil liner first thing worked really well. No smudges, and I like the sleeker look of liquid liner better than pencil. And I don’t even have a “good” liner yet – it’s just some grocery store thing I probably bought a year ago and let rot in my drawer.

I somehow never learned how to apply eyeliner. I know there are varying opinions out there but do you line the top and bottom or just the top?

A lot of it depends on the kind of look you’re going for and the shape of your eye. I think this pin is a great place to start for inspiration:

You could also stop by your local Sephora or department store cosmetics counter to ask them their opinion. Those gals are a wealth of knowledge!
And, of course, standing in front of a mirror and experimenting is always fun! Just try out several looks to see which appeals most to you! :)
Play around with it in the mirror and see what looks good! I used to line my eyes top and bottom, but, since I wear glasses and my eyes can look a little droopy I stopped using the bottom liner and focused on sweeping the liner up slightly on the outer top corner. Brightened everything right up!

I feel like if you wear eye liner, you HAVE to wear mascara too, or else it looks funny. And that adds even more time, and all that stuff on my eyes draws so much moisture out of my contacts, it forces me to switch to glasses halfway through the day, thus covering up all the pretty makeup I spent the time applying! Any ideas?
Flawless is right! Your eyeliner in that pic is perfect. I don’t think I could swing it. I’m bad at panting my face. Here’s my problem: I’m a tired mom. I have dark circles. Sometimes, when I put eye liner on, I look even MORE tired. So I must be putting it on wrong..on the bottom. If you have time, would you do a post for a complete eye makeup newbie like me? Thanks. =)

Liquid liner freaks me out. I may try it, since the bang thing you recommended still is working out. lol

I wanted to try liquid eyeliner so I picked up some cheap stuff to experiment. That was probably a mistake, because it always ended up flaking into my eyes throughout the day. I’ve been meaning to ask for recommendations, so this works out for me!
It’s funny Heather mentioned Gennifer Goodwin–I always have thought you two look alike!
I’m wondering if I just have an extremely thick lash line or something, because I can never figure out if I should put the liner above or below the lash line, or both – and then ‘fill in” the space between individual lashes. Not sure this question even makes sense…

Here’s my problem, I always blink before it dries and then I have the liquid liner caked on my upper lids. How do you solve that?
