Strange Gods: Unmasking the Idols in Everyday Life

strange gods

I just finished Strange Gods by the always smart and often sassy Elizabeth Scalia (AKA: The Anchoress) and was blown away by its goodness. Some spiritual works offer delicious food for thought but aren’t necessarily fun to read, and some are amusing but aren’t terribly edifying, but Elizabeth manages to gift us with both in her new book.

Her words entertained me, challenged me, and left me wanting to email her and insist that she give me a sneak peek of her next work (which she’d better be working on!). I already knew that Elizabeth was incredibly wise and a phenomenal writer but it can be hard to transition from writing short articles to penning full-length books. She nailed it, though. This book is a triumph and a must-read. I am better for having read it, which is the test of a truly good book, don’t you think?

2.

Writing

pink typewriter

In the year since Style, Sex, and Substance was released I’ve received several lovely offers to write another book from editors that I would love to work with and publishers I admire. Although I was seriously tempted (and do hope to create another book one day soon) the man upstairs made it abundantly clear that it wasn’t quite the right time. Instead I’ve spent the last year simply getting ready for sweet Charlie, enjoying my husband, spending quality time our kids, and settling into our new home. No regrets.

Last week I was invited to contribute a chapter to a new book that is in the works, though, and that feels just right. I don’t think I realized just how much I’ve missed writing. It makes me surprisingly happy to think about spending time this summer penning something new.

Curl Easy Pro Brush

victory rolls

I’m so hopeless as a doer of hair. I don’t think my little girls have ever sported so much as a braid. Which is heartbreakingly sad because I so love cute hair-dos!

I finally mastered the sock bun late last year (after much trial and toil) but Victory Rolls (my absolute fave) have remained elusive.

Until recently!

In my quest to master those cute as pie rolls I consulted with Ms. Pinterest who led me to this post over on the Bobbi Pin blog which recommended using the Curl Easy Pro Brush. Since it was only $6 I went ahead and ordered it but didn’t dare hope. Much to my surprise it actually worked! It may look like a torture device (see link above), and I may be all thumbs, but together we make magic.

Vibrams

photo (23)

My pride has taken a hit (just look at them), but I have a new lease on life thanks to my Vibrams. Up until my third child was born I could easily pull off three miles during the week and six miles on the weekend. After Sophia was born, though, I just could never quite work back up to more than a run/walk and repeat. For some reason (let’s not speculate), I would always end up with knee and hip pain within days of starting to train.

Jen has been singing the praises of Vibrams for over a year now so despite my husband referring to them as monkey shoes and my daughter calling them bunny shoes, I bit the bullet and bought a pair.

Life. Changing.

No aches, no pain, I can run farther than I have in a long time, and with more ease. I know. It’s a hard sell. Need more convincing? I highly recommend reading Born to Run (such a great book). It gives more detail on why so many people are finding Vibrams to be such a Godsend.

5.

The 5K Runner App

5K

So many people rave about the Couch to 5K program but I could never get into it because I just couldn’t imagine messing with a stopwatch (or even just keeping an eye on my watch) while I tried to coax my body out of couch mode and into 5K mode. When I heard there was an app (many, actually) I decided to give it a whirl.

I can now join the chorus of people singing “C25K is the best 5K Training Program EVER!!!” I love it.

There are a bunch of apps to choose from and I had no idea which one was best so I just chose one that had a lot of positive reviews. There aren’t any bells and whistles really, just an encouraging voice that interrupts my music to tell me to “start running” and “slow down to a walk.” Oh, and badges! I get badges for being a good little runner. I never would have imagined that a virtual badge that tells me that I have a “Lion’s Heart” could delight me so but there you go.

Kisses!

Hallie

Five Favorites (vol. 12)

by Hallie @ Moxie Wife on May 14, 2013

Five Favorites, hosted at MoxieWife.com

We moved to Charleston during my first trimester, my second trimester hit right in the middle of the crazy holiday season, and my third trimester found me melodramatically lying on my couch.

Why am I sharing this with you? Simply to explain why it took me no less than nine months to feather my new nest. Our home was so spartan that visitors couldn’t help but comment. In a nice way, of course, but still. They noticed. And though Jen’s fantastic post tried to assure me that this was not a result of my laziness, I have to admit to being pretty relieved when the home decorating bug finally hit me last week.

My Dad happened to be visiting from California and wanted to buy me a birthday present (so sweet!) so we headed to my favorite thrift store while my awesome husband watched the kids. To say that we hit the jackpot might be a little bit of an understatement.

Here, take a peek at my five favorite thrift store finds:

1.

photo (29)

My Dad and I didn’t end up buying this one when we went shopping but I did send Dan a picture and then wouldn’t stop talking about it so he took it upon himself to pick it up, bring it home, and give it to me for Mother’s Day (along with those gorgeous tulips).

He’s the sweetest.

And an amazing writer. (Excerpt hereAwesome review here!)

I just love him to pieces.

2.

This one was a birthday gift from my Dad and brings me such joy for the promise it holds. Can’t you just hear it crying out, “Your children will never lose their coats or shoes again!!!”? Or is that just my imagination? (Shhhhh! Don’t break the spell!)

3.

Another gift from my Dad! I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love this dinette set. Sitting in front of that big picture window in the morning with sweet Charlie, a book, and a cup of coffee has filled my mornings with such sweetness.

4.

Wish me luck (or pray your little hearts out) as I attempt to turn this into a chalkboard! I’m not exactly the crafty type. I just hope I make up for it in enthusiasm because I’ve got buckets of that.

5.

This picture doesn’t do this shelf justice. The color is simply gorgeous in real life. It currently sits to the right of my new dinette set and opposite the mirror above. I’m thinking of perching chalk on the top of it but if you have any other ideas for what it could hold please let me know!

Happy favorite-ing, friends!

Hallie

Five Favorites, hosted at MoxieWife.com

I have family in town so gorgeous Grace has sweetly agreed to play hostess this week. Head over to her place tonight (or tomorrow or the next day or the day after that) to link-up your Five Favorites posts! See you all next Wednesday!

(And one of these days I might even post a non-5 Faves post! I just need to sniff Charlie’s delicious newborn neck and chrism-covered head one or one million more times first. He’s just so yummy!)

Lancome Mousse Radiance Clarifying Self-Foaming Cleanser

Lancome Mousse Radiance Clarifying Self-Foaming Cleanser

Lancome’s Mousse Radiance is everything I’ve ever dreamed a face cleanser could be. I’ve been searching for my ideal face wash for the longest time and have never been perfectly satisfied until now. This deliciousness feels like foamy velvet (which sounds weird, I know, but trust me – it’s so very good), smells incredible, rinses off easily without leaving a bit of residue behind, and keeps my skin clean, healthy, and not the least bit dry. I love this product. If they ever discontinue it I will cry.

2.

Overcoming Anxiety in Marriage by Elizabeth Duffy

You wrote in chapter 4 of the book Style Sex and Substance: “I hung my life on my husband’s fidelity, but I knew he would go to work and see prettier, more outgoing women than I.”  This is exactly my case!  I stay at home with my two young children while my husband travels for work.

On top of that, my husband told me he is attracted to a woman he works with.  I was very glad that he felt he could share that with me.  But at the same time, it made my fear take hold of me, and I have been very, very anxious about it.  I pray a rosary every day, but when issues come up, I just have these moments of sickening fear.

How did you overcome this?

Elizabeth’s response is fantastic. A must-read.

3.

Folex Instant Carpet Stain Remover

Folex Instant Carpet Stain Remover

Does everyone and their mother already know of the miracle that is Folex? Why didn’t anyone tell me??? I know it claims on the bottle that it’s a no-rinse formula and that stains will simply disappear into thin air, but who actually believes those back of the bottle sales pitches? I guess I do now. I pretty much wasted $50 on renting a Rug Doctor this week because after pre-treating our carpet every single spot is gone. I wish I had before and after pictures to show you because this stuff is crazy.

Mothers of the world, do yourself a favor and buy a lifetime supply. (And if you do pick some up for yourself, make sure you saturate the stains and let them sit overnight. A couple of my really bad stains needed to be sprayed twice but they all came out eventually.)

4.

My new Le Creuset Salt and Pepper Shakers

Le Creuset Salt and Pepper Shakers

I discovered the cutest little kitchen store around the corner from my house this past weekend. I wanted to buy all the Le Creuset things (they had a million!) but my pocketbook would only approve the purchase of this sweet salt and pepper set. Aren’t they darling, though? As Rachel said on Instagram, “every kitchen needs a signature S&P.” How very right she is. :)

5.

Blue Tile Backsplash

Blue tile backsplash.

Isn’t that the most gorgeous shade of blue? I can just picture myself happily cooking for hours in a kitchen like that.

Take care, cuties!

1.

3floz.com

3floz.com - beauty products packaged in 3 oz. containers for easy traveling.

Take that, TSA.

So the last time I traveled for a speaking engagement I realized with horror that my beloved hairspray would not be permitted to accompany me on the plane. (Yes, I have told this story once before, and yes, I’m still processing.) Being left with no other option, I stopped in at Ulta upon landing so that I could purchase new hairspray – new hairspray which ended up being used a total of two times before I had to get back on the plane to head home. But no worries – I found a good home for said sweet hairspray. I’d never thoughtlessly leave her in a hotel room trash can. That would just be cruel.

All this is to say that I clearly have a problem.

Ha. No. All this is to say that I think I’ve solved all of our problems, fellow loyal-to-your-beauty-products-until-their-dying-day gals!

Meet 3floz.com.

All of our fave products presented in 3 oz. packaging? Brilliant. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Alexi and Kate!

2.

Antique-Framed Magnetic Chalkboards

There is a very fine line between “need” and “want.”

Sigh. Do you know why Etsy hurts me? Because when I find something absolutely stunning (like the above chalkboard that I’m currently obsessed with), I know that I have no time to pinch my pennies and save up to buy it before someone comes along and snatches it up!

I am absolutely smitten with this particular Etsy find but since she simply can’t be mine I thought I’d share her with all of you lovely ladies in case one of you would like to give her a good home. Just promise that I can come and visit her on occasion, okay?

3.

“FYI…This was NOT made with love.”

Honesty is always the best policy?

Humorous things that take the sting out of loving when you’re not feeling it? L. O. V. E.

4.

Presents.

I ♥ presents.

Word on the street is that it’s in bad taste to admit that you like receiving presents. Really? Whatever. I love presents. Presents are definitely one of my favorite things. If you give me a present you, too, will be one of my favorite things. ;)

(The beautiful box of Sephora goodies above arrived on my doorstep earlier this week thanks to a gift card given to me by Dan for my birthday. He’s the sweetest. All of his sandwiches are definitely made with love.)

5.

The Gram.

Sending out an SOS.

I’ve been making an effort to take more photographs with my Canon for posterity’s sake but I can’t lie – my heart still lies with Instagram. Why? Well…

  1. I find it easier to capture fleeting moments like the one above with my iPhone. (You are right to be afraid, Charlie. Very afraid.)
  2. I appreciate not having to upload photos in order to share them with friends and family.
  3. It has those filters that make this sleep-deprived mama look not quite so scary.
  4. Captions are fun.

Instagram blessings abound.

Kisses!

Hallie
