Five Favorites

Five Favorites (about the new Dan Lord mailing list!)

by Hallie @ Moxie Wife on April 15, 2014

Five Favorites, hosted at MoxieWife.com

1.

One of my favorite things about being married to Dan is that every so often he walks into his small office, disappears for a few hours, and then walks back out with a song in hand. An entire song!

It’s crazy. The man has never had a single music lesson and doesn’t own any expensive equipment, but somehow he manages to pluck the most wonderful melodies out of thin air and wrestle them into digital form. I don’t understand it (my being a decidedly un-artistic type) but I long ago gave up trying to make sense of it and now just enjoy the fruits.

2.

His latest creation is a tribute to John Paul II. It’s absolutely delightful and makes me wish I were wealthy so I could hire a symphony to play it. He’s going to be sending the MP3 out to everyone on his mailing list next week (just in time for the canonization!) so if you’d like receive a free digital download just fill out the form below.

3.

He also plans to send out other things in the future. Things like short stories, excerpts from his books, more music, and maybe a drawing or two? Who knows? They’re surprises. Don’t you just love surprises?

4.

(There’s even a rumor that a Dan and Hallie duet may be shared one of these days but I’m waiting for a priest to assign me an act of humility for penance first.)

5.

Anyway, here is the sign-up form! All you need is an email address and a desire to receive “artistic curiosities” in your inbox every month or so.

(Obviously your email will never be shared or abused. We’d never do such a terrible thing.)

Five Favorites, hosted at MoxieWife.com

1.

Beach Reads

Tempting Fate by Jane Green

Between now and October all of my favorite “beach read” novelists have new books coming out. Jane Green’s Tempting Fate was just released; Emily Giffin’s The One and Only and Sarah Pekkanan’s Catching Air will be available in May; Elin Hilderbrand’s The Matchmaker and Jennifer Weiner’s All Fall Down are both coming out in June; And Jodi Picoult’s Leaving Time is coming out in October.

I cannot wait to dive in.

2.

Sparkle Skin

Sparkle Skin exfoliant by Clinique

I can no longer live without this deliciously invigorating cream-based exfoliant. It’s a sad state of affairs.

3.

How to Keep the Spark Alive

How to Keep the Spark Alive

You all know how I feel about date nights. This Verily article has excellent tips for keeping the date night spark alive from “old” married couples.

4.

Paper-Wrapped Bouquets

Paper-Wrapped Bouquets

If I ever own a flower shop, every bouquet will come wrapped in paper.

(Dan gave me these for my birthday. Aren’t they beautiful?)

5.

Lorde

I love this entire album. LOVE.

Take care, love bugs!

Milktape

Milktape

Mixtapes for the 21st Century? Be still, my little nostalgic heart. Be still.

2.

Mamma Chia

MammaChia

I discovered these when I was in Texas last week. If you’ve jumped on the Chia Seed bandwagon with your whole heart (as I have), you’ve got to try Mamma Chia. I’m partial to Cherry Lime.

3.

Mini Embroidery Hoop Necklaces

MiniEmbroideryHoopNecklace

Jenna‘s new Etsy shop has been calling my name every since she launched it recently. Aren’t her mini embroidery hoop necklaces the cutest? Totally swoon-a-licious.

Happy Birthday by Weezer

A week from Thursday is my birthday! Last year I was 41 weeks pregnant and this year I’m turning 35 and am not 41 week pregnant! Does that call for a celebration or what? So, tell me: what’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done on your birthday? Or, if you’re not the crazy type, what is your best birthday memory? I have plans to make, girlies.

Bisous!

1.

My New Kicks

Keens.jpg

I’m traveling this week and needed a new pair of shoes that are made for walking so I bought these shiny blue beauties. I adore Danskos, but for comfort, you can’t beat Keens. (At least I can’t. I have wide feet and Keens are super sweet to us non-narrow footed gals.)

2.

Neutrogena Cleansing Towelettes

Neutrogena.jpg

Speaking of travel must-haves, from this day forward I refuse to allow any of you to travel without a pack of these deliciously refreshing Neutrogena Cleansing Towelettes stashed in your bag.

3.

Little Diamond Leaves

ring.jpg

Don’t you just love how the diamonds on this ring look like little leaves? They make me happy. Etsy jewelry designers are the best.

4.

Alpha Beta Peel

I splurged on these after Melanie mentioned them and I see now why she’s so smitten. They are a little piece of heaven for your skin.

5.

Hey Eugene

Every spring, without fail, I crave Pink Martini. Mmmmmmm.

Five Favorites (vol. 49)

1.

ThredUp

ThredUp

Charlie is on Team ThreadUp

I cannot even tell you how much I love this company. It’s not cheap to outfit six kiddos and as much as I once loved searching the thrift stores for treasures I really don’t have the time these days. ThredUp is such a gift because I can shop from the comfort of my own home, the prices can’t be beat, and they have seriously cute stuff. Oh, and they only stock things that are in very good condition. Everything I’ve received from them has looked almost new. See that Tea Collection outfit above? Not even $10 total. How crazy is that?

That sounded a lot like an ad, didn’t it? I promise no one paid me to say those things. (Though if you click-through from my site I believe they will give you a $10 credit to use!) I just really love this site. So much.

2.

Rio Beach Cart

Beach Cart

One of the things I learned when we moved to Charleston is that apparently I’m the last person on earth to know of the magic that is this beach cart. I am not even kidding when I tell you that basically every single person who lives here has one. As they should. These things are such lifesavers. Should you, like me, have missed the beach cart memo and happen to live near the water, add to cart stat.

3.

Lily Jade

Screen Shot 2014-03-11 at 8.40.54 PM

Speaking of Edel, Lily Jade (Lily Jade!!!) has offered to send us some of their gorgeous designer diaper bags to give away at the gathering. How unbelievably generous is that? I am so excited about this, I can’t even tell you. These bags are the bee’s knees.

4.

Naptime for Mama

“As mamas, sometimes it’s hard to do things to take care of ourselves. I’ve never thought about napping, unless I was very, very pregnant or postpartum. But I noticed that I had more energy for the rest of the afternoon with my children than I would have had with another cup of coffee. It falls into line with taking the time to go to the Y in the mornings starts me off in a good mood, and boosts my ability to be the best mom and wife I can be, or putting on some mascara, earrings, and shoes gives my important work dignity.

I don’t want my girls to grow up to be women with unbalanced ideas of self-care. I don’t want them to feel entitled to constantly whine about how they “need me-time” and neglect their duties, neither do I want them to be “martyrs” that make the people around them think they are door mats. A healthy balance is so necessary, and it’s my job to show them how, both for their sake, and mine…”

Andrea is one of my favorite bloggers and I love most everything she writes but this post (written almost a year ago) pops into my head on a regular basis. If you have a chance, you really should read the whole thing.

Oh, and lucky duck me gets to meet her this summer at Edel! We’ve been online friends for years. I can’t believe I’ll finally get to give her a real hug!

5.

Postmodern Jukebox

These guys are awesome. I just love their covers. Doo wop, doo wop.

Kisses and hugs and all the ooey gooey lovey stuff,
Hallie

Five Favorites (vol. 48)

by Hallie @ Moxie Wife on February 25, 2014

Five Favorites, hosted at MoxieWife.com

1.

The Clarisonic

Clarisonic

Have I already shared my love for the Clarisonic with you? I think maybe yes.

Okay, I checked and yes, I did. But not in the context of a Five Favorites post so I’m totally allowed to mention it again. If you feel so inclined, you can head over here to read my ode to Clarisonic.

2.

Camp Patton and the Apartment Therapy Awards

Screen Shot 2014-02-25 at 1.23.01 PM

So, these awards are kind of a big deal in the online world and Grace is currently in second place! How cool is that? Voting closes at midnight on Wednesday so grab your friends and rock the Camp Patton vote! You do have to register to vote which is kind of hassle, I know, but I promise it’s super easy!

3.

What Love Looks Like

“It’s odd to begin a marriage the way we did, where our stormy on-and-off dating thing suddenly became a marriage and a family. We didn’t have to get married just because I was pregnant, of course, but we chose to. We chose to knowing that we weren’t exactly in love, and we certainly weren’t sure that each other was The One. We didn’t go into it thinking life was going to be sunshine and lollipops because true love. We knew we had a choice to make, and we made it.

Sometimes I get really caught up in wishing we’d had a more traditional romance, that the Ogre had been speechless when he saw me in my wedding dress, that there had been more flowers and chocolates and less drug interventions and OB appointments. I confuse what our culture tells me love is supposed to look like with what love looks like for me…”

Calah writing about love and marriage is one of my very favorite things. She kills it every time.

4.

The Big Purse Dump

purse dump

I have been having the best time following along with Kendra’s Big Purse Dump link-up. It is so fascinating to me to see what other women carry around in their purses. If you haven’t read the post (and clicked-through to the other entires) you really should. Unless you were planning on being productive today in which case, change your plans.

 5.

Safe and Sound by Capital Cities

Oh my word, do I ever love this. I love the song. I love the duo. I love the video. I love it all.

Stay safe and sound, cutie pies!
Hallie

Five Favorites at Fountains of Home!

by Hallie @ Moxie Wife on February 18, 2014

Five Favorites, hosted at MoxieWife.com

Because apparently it’s our year to be sick from Thanksgiving straight through to Easter, the Lord kidlets are now battling some sort of mean stomach bug. Sweet-as-pie Christy sweetly agreed to save me by hosting Five Favorites on her blog, Fountains of Home, this week. So, head over there later tonight for the favorites and stay for the rest of her smashing content. I’ve been reading Christy for years and years and years and just adore her to pieces. You will, too. Promise.
